Thanksgiving weekend project

Hi all. Happy Thanksgiving! Hope you're all having a relaxing weekend and finding a little time to sew. I finally had a little time to quilt. I have to finish two baby quilt tops this weekend in order to have enough time to give them as holiday presents. One down! I saw a picture of this pattern online and just kind of made up my own version. And for the back.....I had cut waaaaaaay to many trapazoid pieces so I started cutting things in half and then in quarters and putting some white sashing in between. Its a little busy but at least there's no waste! Hope everyone is well. David

troubleshooting...

Hello NYC Metro Mod Quilters-
I am enjoying spending my holiday today with my newly tuned-up machine, fixing the timing really improved my free-motion quilting. But I'm still having lots of trouble with my thread breaking... like this:Can you see what happened there? While free-motion quilting in little swooping curves (it's worse when trying angles) the thread breaks partially and gets wound up in itself and then eventually breaks entirely.

Has anyone else had this problem?? It's a new needle, a newly tuned machine... I'm hoping it's just poor quality thread or something? I'm using Coats Cotton for machine quilting... any ideas would be appreciated, sometimes this happens every few inches. Not so much fun.

Happy post-Thanksgiving all! I'm looking forward to the upcoming meeting...
Thanks,
-Christa

For my Friend whose 40

Okay, In my recent past life I also supervised....that time it was Assistant D.A.'s and I had the pleasure of having a wonderful group of ADA's...One of them, became a really good friend, and we travelled a lot (mostly Central America...)and hung out in Central Park at Summer Stage on those wonderfully hot days...and then 2 years ago, she was one of three very very close friends that moved away...one to AZ, one went to Ghana, and she went to Seattle...All of that to say, she just turned 40, and she is here for a bridal shower, and we have a surprise B'day party planned tonight. We hung out over the weekend...and I realized...OMGoodness, I didn't make her ANYTHING>>>>>

So what did I do...After the Guild meeting yesterday..smiles...I shopped there...and then headed to my favorite City Shop....and picked up some "NY State of Mind" fabric. (I like that song...and that's what I hear in my head everytime i see the new york collection of fabric..) and I whipped this up in about an Hour and a Half, and now She has a little something to remember NYC...smiles..

Long Island, anyone??

Does anyone from this group want to go to the Long Island Quilters Society (www.liqs.org) meeting Monday night? It's at 7:30p in the Freeport Recreation Center. I thought the program was a show by Karen Kay Buckley, but now the website doesn't say that anymore... I am not actually member of the group, you can pay a small fee to drop in to meetings. I'm considering joining, but would love to have company. Anyone else from Long Island? Or city-dwellers, I could pick you up at a train station... :-) I'll have my new name tag on, inspired by this group... :-)

december block challenge

This isn't the block I was planning to make at all, but I bought a new pattern and needed to do up a test block.. the cheddars were in arms' reach and look what happened.. (can you spot my mistake?  this is why we do test blocks..)
I might still make another, there are a lot of 12" blocks I've been meaning to try.

looking forward to next month~

Flowers for a friend...

This was inspired by my orange challenge block for December... not the color but the flower. A friend had a significant birthday recently and I wanted to get her flowers, but ones that would last. It's about 2'x2' and I had to sort of cheat with the piecing, I couldn't figure out how to do a "Y" seam so I ended up doing a sort of applique seam to join the flowers to the stems. Anyway, it was interesting!

McCall's Design Contest

I am happy to be one of the 12 finalists in the McCall's Quilting Design Star Competition.
Below is my entry for Challenge # 2.

If I make it through this challenge there is one more round before they announce the winner.

For this challenge we were sent 10 fat quarters from Robert Kaufman Fabric.

We had to use at least 8 of the 10 fabrics. The quilt needed to be at least 24 x 24 or 576 square inches. We could add fabric to the mix - but their fabric had to make up at least 50 % of the quilt. I chose to add Dupioni Silk for the other fabrics.

Pop over to my own blog for a description of how I arrived at this design. And pop over to the McCall's site to cast a vote! (Also it would be great if you would leave a comment in the comment box and then click "add comment"

1st Time Part Two...

1st Time I Followed Instructions

Okay, yes this is a first for me. I actually followed a pattern, did not deviate...go outside the lines, box or anything. Although i did use more color schemes than it suggested...(My binding was a fifth fabric, not including the backing). But that doesn't count...right?

These are the placemats I began at the Joyful Quilter in Schenectedy...I will bring them in December...

Prospect Park Quilt Show

This weekend I took a walk over to the Lefferts Historic House in Brooklyn's Prospect Park, located near the entrance at Ocean Ave and Flatbush Ave, to check out the 19th Annual Quilt Show. The theme is "Green Quilts," and the interpretations on that are terrific, from quilts inspired by nature, to ones using recycled fabrics. And one quilt was familiar:

Another one from Michele Kucker, which we got a preview of at our last meeting. Congrats, Michele! It turned out great!

BUMBLE BEANS BASICS QUILT GATHER EVENT

press release for Wed. event:

On November 10, 2010, thirty-eight families living in BASICS/Promesa Health Systems Inc.’s transitional supportive housing are in for a real treat.  Quilters from all over the United States and Canada, including Bumble Beans Inc. founder and prominent quilter, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, have united to create handmade quilts for each family.

The quilts will be presented to the families at 1564 St. Peter’s Ave in the Bronx (between St. Raymond’s and Glebe Avenues), one of BASICS/Promesa Health Systems’ residences for the homeless.

BASICS/Promesa is the largest Latino-founded and led community based organization in New York State.  In addition to the transitional supportive housing for homeless families, other programs include: addiction treatment, primary medical care, specialized services for individuals with HIV/AIDS, as well as residences for those with developmental disabilities, and rental housing for low income households. The roots of both BASICS and Promesa are deep in the Bronx and East Harlem communities.

BASICS/Promesa President, Raul Russi, expressed his appreciation for Mrs. Findlay Wolfe, who facilitated the quilt drive, as well as for the generous quilters who responded to her requests for quilts. “Victoria heard of our families and responded with a generosity born of compassion and commitment. She and others from the quilting community wanted to make the families feel better. They have done this now through the use of their work and talented hands. How can anything be more special?”

A visit to the Basic Housing, Inc. and meeting with the families and children who reside in the organization’s temporary homeless housing units helped Mrs. Findlay Wolfe learn about the destabilizing effect of homelessness. But she was also impressed by the courage and persistence of the families. She felt an immediate connection. When asked to comment on her experience, Mrs. Findlay Wolfe stated, “I had to help. I saw these amazing families with next to nothing, yet still smiling….You have to do your part….We all have to do our part….”
And did she ever!

As soon as she posted a request on her blog for quilt donations, gorgeous, vividly colored quilts were sent from Hawaii, Canada and everywhere in between directly to the South Bronx doorstep of Basic Housing, Inc. Soon, there were enough quilts to distribute to many of the families who reside at Basic Housing, Inc.  While this event marks the season finale of The Bumble Beans & Basic Housing Inc. Quilt Gather, we hope to continue to gather quilts so that these remarkable families will have a handcrafted item to remind them that others admire their strength and encourage their personal growth.

The presentation of quilts will take place from 10 AM to noon at the St. Peter’s housing site. Quilt donors, elected officials and others have been invited to attend and participate in the warmth of the occasion.

2nd challenge block

Got inspired seeing everyone else's... and decided to continue to clean out some of my stash... and found these great yellows from a quilt I'd make five years ago!
