May Bee Block for E

I am late on this, I know, but I was a good bee member and emailed E before the end of her month to let her know.  Still, please don't follow my bad example!
I had good reason to be late though, I was away from my sewing machine and inspiration was no where to be found for the entire month of May!!  But in June, we escaped to Paros, and that's just what I needed..

I hope my block captures enough of all the elements-- fire and water are obvious, and a sail boat equals wind, right?  The boat is made of wood, and that is as much earth as I could fit in the scene (I tried to get in a beach or an island, but couldn't manage it..).

E, hope you like it.
xoxo

I'm the Queen! I'm the Queen!!

July Bee Blocks . . .
I get to be the Queen for a whole month!
How exciting.
This is my first Bee and I have to say it has been a lot of fun.
Our first two months went very well, and I have really enjoyed
being a part of this group.

For My Block I have chosen Triangles.
I love triangles, all kinds.
I am sending each of you a red triangle to use in your block.
Please don't cut it up, use it just as it is.
I am also sending along brights and scraps, and other triangles.
I would love for you to mix in some brights from your stash too,
make it really scrappy!

You can do any kind of block you would like . . .
You just have to use the red triangle.
The triangle doesn't have to be in the center of the block,
put it wherever your heart desires.

And you don't have to use other triangles if you are not inclined.
Just that one red one. Mix it up and throw caution to the wind.
I am looking for a graphic, bright scrappy block.

Flying Geese? Love it.
Half Square Triangles? Love it.
60* Triangles? Love it too.
Wonky or not, it's all up to you.
Please make your blocks 12.5" square.
Your packets went out today.
I can't wait to see what you come up with!

I wish we had a meeting this month so you could all curtsy to me!
Haha. Have fun!

June Bee Block for Kimberly

Zippers and Rick Rack ends up on some prairie points...Kimberly, I Hope you like it...Boy what a challenge...I was a bit intimidated by the zipper, and then even more in awe at all that came to mind.  Then, I breathed and let the fabric be still...and then everytime i came back to it, I was seeing a flower bloom...and I thought about the prairie...and open fields...and lovely butterflies.  Now, prior to this challenge/bee block request, I did not know what a prairie point was, nor did I have the faintest idea how to make them...

Thanks to the lovely internet, I discovered two types of prairie points, and chose the ones that nestled within each other.  and Voila...

Flowers for Kimberly

Did someone say texture? check. embellishments? check. Thanks Kimberly, this was fun to create.
I used some jersey knit fabric to create a fun raw-edge applique, sitting on top of the fussy cut piece I was sent.

June Block for Kimberly

Kimberly asked for a block with texture. This was a challenge until I looked through Gwen Marston's "Liberated Quiltmaking II" and saw her baskets. The embellishment I received from Kimberly would make a perfect handle for a basket so here is the result. I hope you like it, Kimberly.

Bee Block for Kimberly

Kimberly sent some lovely fabrics and rickrack for her block and asked for texture. Well, I have been caught up in the yoyo craze, and I made a bunch. Was told they looked like candy and should be called yum yums!

Group Quilts June Update

Every quilt we make as a group is more amazing than the last.

These reworked traditional blocks are going to look great when they're sashed.

This stripes quilt top is my new favorite, but that's only because it's the one most recently completed.

And my favorite most-recently-quilted quilt is this cheddar challenge!

Finally, here are the first bunch of blocks for the our Mod Bee, for Earamichia. Looking forward to seeing this one come together!

More June Show & Tell Pics

Some more pics from last week's meeting!

Love Jody's additions to E's round robin, can't wait to see what David does with it next!

Jody and Victoria made these with the "ugly" fabrics they picked up at the April meeting. Hard to believe they were ever ugly!

More "ugly" fabric reworked by Lisa, before & after.

Good luck in Portland, Suzanne! We'll miss you!

Nicole's cheap eBay score!

Bee Block for Kim

I finished my bee block for Kim today.

Yes, I got a zipper!
I was intimidated for sure,
but decided the best way in was to jump!

I did add some other fabrics and I think they work really well.

After I took the first picture, I decided to add snaps for bug eyes.
Kim, I hope you like this one!
It was really fun.
You can read about the whole thing here.

Stripes quilt with backing

Karen so nicely dropped off the backing for our stripes quilt! doesn't it look great?
Thanks Karen!
It's being sent off to Gwen to long arm it...
THANK YOU GWEN for volunteering!

Here is a link to our RULES for that quilt block challenge if interested..

June Bee

Hello, I’m Kimberly! This is my first time to participate in a Quilting Bee. I was a bit nervous, but the first month went very well. I’m super excited about being the Queen Bee this month. I’m a teacher, so I do a lot of sewing during breaks and our school year just ended on May 19th!

I bought the inspiration fabric on sale and thought this would be the perfect opportunity for very creative quilters to make fabulous blocks for an unbelievable finished product. I like the strong graphic elements, but I’m especially looking for texture. I have provided each participant with my inspiration fabric, coordinating fabrics, and a texture element. I have fussy-cut the main fabric, and no two people received exactly the same block ingredients. Here is a list of some texture ideas I brainstormed:

Selvage Piping Zippers

Hexagons Chenille Cathedral windows

Yo-yos Buttons

Rick rack Prairie points

Rules

12.5” block please

Use the fabric provided

Feel free to add more texture or fabric from your stash as long as it coordinates with the inspiration or coordinating fabrics

Add some texture

Have FUN…I can’t wait to see what each of you creates!!! J

June Meeting Highlights/Review

Good Sunday evening Metro Mod lovelies...

Yesterdays meeting was fantastic. It was great seeing everyone, and we accomplished sooo much.

We have decided that we have grown and have so many wonderful things happening that we have to form a not-for-profit corporation. We are not seeking tax exemption at this stage, but we are incorporating in the State of New York. So, yesterday will be known as the first official meeting. We have selected officers and there term will run through next August 31, 2012.

Now let me present the newly formed Board of the NYC Metro Modern Quilt Guild, Inc.

President - Victoria
Vice-President - Kim H.
Finance/Treasurer - Andrea
Corporate Secretary - Earamichia
Membership Chair - Karen H.
Charity Chair - Jackie R.
Website Chair - Amy D.
Blog Chair - Jessica
Historian/Librarian - Mary B.
Facebook Chair - Daniela

We will continue to have meetings every other month. We are off for the summer and our next meeting will be on Saturday October 1, 2011.

We have also agreed on a dues amount, to help fund all of the wonderful things that are happening for our blossoming guild. The dues year will begin on September 1, 2011 and notices will be going out to remind everyone.

We have formed a Bylaws committee. The committee members are, myself (Earamichia), Amy S., Daniela, Nicole K., And Cassandra. We will have the Bylaws completed and distributed before the October meeting so that they can be adopted at the October meeting.

Guild Show

In lieu of an October 2011 show, we have been asked to participate in the Original Sewing & Quilt EXPO. We will be featured in nine cities beginning in September 2011 through April 2012. When we get our pieces back, we will work on our New York showing. The information for the show was distributed at the meeting. For those participants that were not able to make the meeting, we will provide you with the necessary information. Amy S. Is the point person for the show. You can email nycmetromod at gmail dot com with any questions.  Registration is now CLOSED for this event.

We had our lovely cheddar block on display, as well as our finished stripe block top.

We had an abbreviated show and tell that was posted already.

This concludes the highlights of our meeting.

NYC Mod Bee - June Block

For Kimberly's month of the NYC Mod Bee, she asked us to make a 12.5 inch block that featured interesting textures.  I received some selvedge fabric and giant rickrack in my fabric package, and suggestions to use prairie points, hexagons, etc.

I ended up handpiecing large hexagons for the block.  I included rickrack, selvedges, lace overlay and pintucked fabric for a lot of interesting texture elements.  After I handpieced the hexagons, I machine-sewed the blocks to some plain white fabric.  Enjoy!

Patchwork in the Park - Invitation!

It was great seeing everyone at yesterday's Guild meeting!  Our June meeting was the last formal get-together of the season, but a number of people expressed an interest in informal meet-ups this summer!  For August, we have the Alliance of American Quilts events (see sidebar on the right), and the Friday night event at Victoria's is selling out quickly...don't forget to buy your tickets!

For July, we are doing TWO meet-ups (to accommodate people's vacation schedules)!  We will be holding two "Patchwork in the Park" days, where folks can meet up to enjoy the summer, chat, eat lunch, and bring their handwork and/or show-and-tell with them!  Come to both!

Dates:
Saturday, July 9th (raindate:  Sunday, July 10th)
AND
Saturday, July 23rd (raindate:  Sunday, July 24th)

Time:
11:00am to 2:00pm

Location:
Central Park, just WEST of the Great Lawn (under the trees in the shade).  Enter the park at 81st Street from the West side or the East side.  It is hard to give an exact location depending on the availability of space, but just walk along the trees on the western edge of the Great Lawn ballfields to find us.   Click here for a map (the Great Lawn is in the middle).

To Bring:
--Lunch and drinks for yourself.
--Dessert for the group (optional).
--Picnic blanket or sheet.
--Handwork projects!  Ideas:  quilt bindings, English paper piecing, applique, quilt labels, embroidery, mending, crocheting, a drawing sketchbook.
--Show and tell (optional and very informal).

Notes:
--If is is not raining on the morning of the event, we will hold it as usual.  Thundershowers are common forecasts for the summer, but they usually happen in the late afternoon.
--If it is raining on the morning of the event, I will post a notice on the Blog that we will hold the event on the raindate.
--Feel free to include crafting-inclined friends (even knitters...gasp!) and significant others.  Warm-weather fun is all-inclusive!  Just warn them that it will be a sewing-focused day, so they should bring a book or other way to entertain themselves.  :)
--Feel free to post questions on the blog!  See you soon!
