NYC Mod Bee May Queen Bee: Blocks From the Greatest Story Ever Told

Hello NYC Metro Mod Bee Folks,

Welcome to the new bees in the group.  A quick note, I will be sending out your packages by wednesday.  I thought I had more time, but with leaving the old job, starting a new one (Woo hoo) the days got away from me.

Anyway, I was thinking about what to do.  May came around pretty darn quick, i must say.  So in keeping with the elements of earth etc., I have always wanted a "Bible Quilt".  So this Month you will have a choice of blocks from the "greatest story ever told".  Straight from the good book, both Old and New Testament choices.  In each package I will provide an easy and a difficult block options for each of  you to choose.  I decided to do this so that I can be assured to have a variety of quilt blocks.

For those that want a quick peek at my source of inspiration.  Just check out this link.

I will be using the following blocks.

  • Jacobs Ladder
  • Job's Tears
  • Children of Israel
  • Joseph's Coat
  • David & Goliath
  • Solomon's Puzzle
  • Gethsemene
  • Crown of Thorns
  • Star of Bethlehem
  • Road to Damascus
  • Bright Morning Star
  • Palm Leaves
So Stay Tuned....

June Challenge Block

Here's my block for the June Challenge (can you tell by the fabric selection that I'm ready for summer already?):

Thought it would be fun to share my second quilt, too. I think I just graduated from patchwork to piecing! (Also, let it be known that writing about yourself in the third person feels weird!)

Greer's Star

This is a star I used on a star quilt I made for my niece Stella.  I made templates for it that I never thought I would use again.  Thank you for amortizing them.

Mini stars for Suzanne

When I saw these fabrics and Suzanne's instructions, I really wanted to make her a baby star.........then I made a couple more!
I agree my fellow bee-mates, these were such fun fabrics to work with.
Hope you like them, Suzanne...can't wait to see how they all go together.

Quiltcon Challenge Block

Here are my block entries for the Modern Quilt Guild's QuiltCon Challenge.      I know the  conference isn't until next February, but I couldn't wait to get started when I  received the fabric I'd ordered.

NYC Mod Bee - Spots Open for Next Round!

UPDATE on 4/23:  ALL BEE SPOTS HAVE BEEN FILLED!  THANK YOU FOR YOUR INTEREST!

CALLING ALL MEMBERS!

It's hard to believe that it's been a full year since the NYC Mod Bee started!  We've made a bunch of beautiful and creative blocks for our fellow Quilting Bee members, and it's been a lot of fun seeing all of the creative techniques and ideas in action.

We are ready to start the next round of the NYC Mod Bee, and we have some open spots for new members!  If you are interested in joining us, here are the steps:

1.  Read all about how the NYC Mod Bee works HERE.  Some Queen Bees send out fabric to everyone, and some Queen Bees prefer that people use their own scraps (while keeping in mind that some people have a small stash).

2.  Please make sure you can make a year-long commitment.  If you need to drop out midway during the year,  you'll need to find someone to take your place.

3.  So far, we have five open spots.  These are the open months for Queen Bee spots:  (i) August 2012; (ii) October 2012; (iii) November 2012; (iv) January 2013 and (v) April 2013.

4.  If you are interested, please email me the following at [nicole.h.kaplan] @ [gmail.com] (remove the brackets before sending):
(a)  Full Name
(b)  Mailing Address
(c)  Email Address (and blog, if you have one)
(d)  Preferred month to be a Queen Bee (pick at least 2 options).

We are starting the May blocks soon, so the sooner you can sign up, the better (first come, first serve)!  Happy quilting!

April Bee Block - Stars for Suzanne!

I completed this star block for Suzanne the other day.  She provided all of the beautiful fabrics...they were so much fun to use together!  I fussy-cut the center for some added "pop."  For the pattern, I used a slightly-modified version of THIS block.

I hope Suzanne enjoys it!

Cinderella Quilts: Reinventing the UFO
Turn your rotary cutter into a magic wand! Wave it over your orphan quilt tops and blocks, make the first cut, and transform them into dazzling new work!
Take your old, unfinished and leftover pieces out of the drawer, bring them to class and be their "fairy godmother." We'll discuss, evaluate, brainstorm and experiment as you discover how to completely reinvent those stalled projects.
Magically turn them into original quilts you never imagined by adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing them. No math, just creativity! Amaze yourself! Give these old "dogs" new life and have fun at the same time.

My opposites block for the June Challenge! This was made with leftover Cherry Wood semi-solid from the February Challenge plus some 30s repro print from my first eBay foray into fabric about 7 years ago. Fun!

"Maverick Stars" for Jody

Wow!  Just looking at all these posts makes me happy.  Jody is going to end up with one fantastic quilt!  Here's my star block contribution - I used the "Maverick Star" block pattern so they are intentionally a bit wonky.  Center squares are from Moda's "A Stitch in Color" by Malka Dubrawsky.   I love the orange and blue fabric you chose, but my pieces had no details on the selvage - whose is it?  Laura

Seeing Stars

My block for Jody, using a tutorial I found on Crazy Mom Quilts. Please ignore that wobbly seam, it's just bad pressing, it's straight I swear!

Thanks for the opportunity to design a star block for you!
Hope you like the fabrics I added to the orange & blue you sent.

Wonky Stars for March

I'm so happy with the blocks all you creative bees made for me. Thank you so much. This picture was taken at Victoria's at our last meeting. Aren't they great! I'm short three blocks before I can put it all together (one of the missing is mine). As soon as I receive the other two, I'll sew it all together and post another picture. Isn't this going to be fabulous when it's all done?!! I love it.

Lucky 13 Bee Catch up blocks

A bit overdue, but here are some blocks I finally finished for the last three queen bees:

December: Karen's Rocky Road to Kansas
I thought the lovely green Karen gave us to work with would go really well with greys, pinks and purples.

January: Chris' Curve + Hot
Now this was curve was a challenge! This was a fun block I made up as I went along.

February: Ellen's Winter Trees

I really liked this block, I think I will be making some more of these in the future. I really liked the grey with touches of cool blue here and there.

Lucky 13 Block for Jody

I'm jumping in early, so don't panic. I have May as my queen bee month. But since I've got the fabric and idea, I thought I'd post now. I'll be sending out supplies soon. Each member will receive a piece of the orange and the blue and will be asked to make a 12 1/2 inch block that has a star or stars. You may make any shape or size star (3 points, 4 points, 8 points .... whatever you choose... and as may or few as you wish [but at least 1!]) Also please feel free to add whatever fabrics you wish from your own stash.
