Under the Wire: August Block for Binita

This was great fun to work on, and confirmed my sad state as someone really really not liberated.  Even just adding as I go I realized I was ending up with a pattern!

Beautiful colors!  I can't wait to see all the blocks together.

And with the package just arrived today from Nicole, there's no rest for the wicked!

While it rains....

This is the first long weekend of the school year...and it's raining and raining because of hurricane Isaac.  I'm not complaining because we've been in a drought all summer.  Also, it makes for perfect conditions for me to do some sewing while the hubby naps on the couch.

A Liberated Log Cabin for Binita

Red and White with some Cheddar for Nicole

When the sun comes back out, I will take a picture of my New York Beauty wallhanging.  I have it hanging in my living room.  I find myself just staring at it...it's AMAZING!  Also, I'm getting the binding on last year's bee quilt.  I love all the quilts I make, but these are two of my favorites.

NYC Mod Bee - September Block!

NYC MOD BEE – September 2012

Happy September!  (This is a bit early to post, but I wanted the Bee members to receive the packages by Labor Day.)

For my Queen Bee month, I wanted to make a quilt inspired by last year’s Red and White quilt exhibit.  Two quilts caught my eye:  a classic sampler quilt, and a quilt featuring the tiniest bit of cheddar fabric:

Another view of the quilt available HERE.

Accordingly, I've asked the Bee members to make the following block:

--Size:  12.5 inches square.  If you have time and extra fabric, feel free to make two blocks (but certainly not required)!  :)

--Colors:  The block should only use the enclosed red and white fabrics.  It is Kona in Bone, Tomato Red and Papaya.  Only a very small bit of the cheddar fabric should be added to the block for emphasis and accent!  It should be mostly be a red and white block.

--Pattern:  Please make a “modern” sampler block.  Wonky or asymmetrical is great but certainly not required, as seen in the sample quilt below.  Have fun with your modern designs (plenty of cool block ideas on Flickr)!

--Caveat:  The danger with red and white fabric is that pinwheel/swirling patterns can look, unfortunately, like a swastika.  Not something I want for this or any quilt!  Please avoid pinwheels and blocks with that effect.

Below is a great sample of a “modern” red and white sampler quilt.

Thanks so much, and happy sewing!

August Bee Block - Liberated Log Cabin

I just finished Binita's Bee block for August, and I really enjoyed it!  I used the fabric to make a "courthouse steps" style liberated log cabin block.

Binita, you sent great fabric (especially liked the ability to reverse many of the fabrics), and I can't wait to see the final result!  Enjoy!

Naomi's Block

Here's another "leaf" for Naomi's autumn quilt.  Not your usual leaf, so hope you like it.
It's approximately 7 1/2 by 9 1/2

And a third leaf falls ...

Loved trying a few new techniques to make this block!

And the second leaf to fall...

I made a second leaf for Naomi with much neater appliqué (someone finally remembered her lightweight fusible interfacing was designed for exactly this sort of thing). The background fabric this time is Kona cinnamon, 10.5" square.

Sewing for Fall in an August thunderstorm

My first attempt at a Fall leaf for Naomi. The applique is a little... rustic. I think since I have so much of the original fabric left I might attempt another leaf iteration! The base block is 10" square.

Binita's Liberated Log Cabin Bee Block

I've spent the afternoon working on this liberated log cabin block for Binita and have loved every minute of it as her instructions gave us so much freedom :) . You can see a bit more about it on my blog post Liberated Log Cabin - My August Bee Block

Hope you like it Binita and I think your quilt is going to be amazing :)

Bee Blocks

NYBeauty for Kim- who knew paper piecing was so easy. I also learned the hard way that I really should measure the 1 inch on the paper to make sure it is 1 inch. whoops.

A Triangles Galore for Lisa -this block was a lot of fun. The green in the picture looks kind of dull but it is actually really pretty (if I do say so myself).
A Liberated Log Cabin for Binita - Whenever I do something wonky I can never get the center in the middle. Does this happen to anyone else?

Hope you all are having great summers!

Lucky 13 Bee Blocks

Catching up...

For Laura - I really had fun with this block - loved the pez-like fabric.

For Margaret -  HST's in summery colors.  Also fun to make!

These are both on their way to you.  Thanks for the bit of summer....looking forward to the autumn leaves and cool weather!

Triangles Galore for the Red-Headed Mermaid

Here is my July block for you my dearest July queen bee. Hope you enjoy. It was a bit tricky, had to pull part out and start again. But all in all I would do it all again for you.

MODERN BEE BLOCK FOR AUGUST - THE LIBERATED LOG CABIN

My block for August is the liberated log cabin. I love quilts that are offbeat and express freedom in design. So I’d like to ask you to create an original free-form block using the log cabin as an inspiration. Please be inspired by the variety of log cabins out there like Courthouse Steps, Half Log, Quarter Log, Bento Box and others.

There are no rules. Edges can be wonky. Seams don’t have to be straight or exactly quarter inch. You can add or delete as you go—and please don’t worry about making a mistake. You don’t even have to use a ruler. Work intuitively without too much planning or worrying about where you are going.

The final block should measure 12 inches (or thereabouts) but don’t worry if it’s a little bigger or smaller, more or less.

I’ve chosen four fabrics, two Kona solids and two prints. You can reverse the printed fabric and use the wrong side for variety (as I did on my block). You can also add your own scraps in a coordinating colorway.

And also, if improvisation is not your cup of tea, you can still make a traditional log cabin. Most importantly, have fun.

Best,
Binita
