Mod Bee (Round 2) April

Hi everyone,

For my month, I am requesting confetti blocks, from the Block Party (Megan Risse's December Block).

I wanted to have the fabric to you all before I left (I'm going to Japan until the 6th), but I just plum ran out of time.  I promise that I will have it out the week that I get back, but there is no hurry at all for this.  Whenever they're done is fine!

Thanks!

Scrappy Trip Along block for Carole

These blocks are so fun to make.  We had a snow day from school yesterday, so I made this quick and easy block.  Earlier this year, I jumped on the Scrappy Trip Along bandwagon along with so many other quilters.  I look forward to seeing how this quilt looks when it's finished.

BOJAGI exhibit KOREA Society!

Bojagi : Cloth, Color & Beyond by Chunghie Lee
The exhibition features internationally recognized Korean textile artist Chunghie Lee’s contemporary Bojagiworks. Once commonly employed in everyday life for carrying, covering and storing objects, Bojagi now has become one of the most widely recognized and appreciated of all traditional Korean textile arts. Chunghie Lee’s work integrates traditional Bojagi motifs into innovative designs with vivid color compositions. Evoking the artistic inspiration of the countless anonymous women who made Bojagi through the ages, Lee's art retains a meaningful link to the past. Lee has been teaching at Rhode Island School of Design since 1999 and her works are in permanent collections in numerous museums, including Victoria & Albert Museum, London, U.K. and the Museum of Art & Design, New York, USA.

Brooklyn Museum QUILT show!

"Workt by Hand:" Hidden Labor and Historical Quilts

March 15-September 15, 2013

“Workt by Hand”: Hidden Labor and Historical Quilts showcases approximately thirty-five American and European quilt masterpieces from the Brooklyn Museum’s collection. Spanning two centuries of quilt making, the exhibition features examples of the most iconic quilt designs and techniques, including the "Barn Raising" style, the "Garden Basket" style, "Double Wedding Band" designs, the "Rose of Sharon" pattern, and the Amish "Sunshine and Shadow" style, as well as a variety of album quilts.
"Workt by Hand" considers how issues common to the handmade nature of quilting, such as authorship and collectivity, have affected the interpretation and reception of quilts. By showing the quilts both vertically—as they are now frequently shown in museums and galleries—and horizontally, as though on the beds for which they were originally designed, the exhibit explores how the historical designation of quilts as crafts shifted in the 20th century toward an appreciation of quilts as works of abstract art.

Group tours of "Workt by Hand" are available Wednesdays and Fridays through Sundays from 11 AM to 4:30 PM, and Thursdays from 11 AM to 8 PM.
Reserve your tour here, orvisit our website for more information.

“Workt by Hand”: Hidden Labor and Historical Quilts is organized by Catherine Morris, Curator of the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art, Brooklyn Museum.
This exhibition is made possible by the Elizabeth A. Sackler Foundation.

April Block of the Month

Our block of the month challenge for this month is RED half-square triangle blocks.  Make as many 5 1/2" half-square triangle blocks* as you'd like, using a solid red or tonal red print (red on red) for one of the triangles and a print of your choice on the other.  For every block you make and bring to the April meeting, you will get a one chance to win them all!

*Note:  5 1/2"  is the unfinished size, including 1/4" around for seam allowance -- will finish at 5".

p.s.  Here are two tutorials on how to make HST.  They are just two of the first ones that came up on Google.  Feel free to search your own favorite tutorial!  BTW, I personally prefer the "cut 'em a little larger and trim 'em down" method mentioned on the about.com site, especially when I'm only making a few squares at a time.

Enjoy!
