Mod Bee May - Modern Sunbonnet Sue

I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one that struggled a bit for inspiration on this one.  I found this image on a google search and just liked it.  She's cute, but she's got some attitude. 

Mod Bee 3 - May Block for E

Here is my May block for E. She requested a modern Sunbonnet Sue. Never appliqued before so was a little apprehensive... but after watching a couple tutorials on youtube things fell into place. Good excuse to break out the MistyFuse I scored at Quilters Take Manhattan last year!

I came across The Sun Sets on Sunbonnet Sue while browsing around for inspiration (randomly found it here in a book called Feminist messages: coding in women's folk culture). I was really tickled by the whole thing and showed the excerpt & subversive quilt to my boyfriend. We started bouncing ideas around for what my block should be. He said that Sue looked like Kenny from South Park in that quilt. Then he mentioned Darth Vader and I ran with it.

A block for Maren.  I have to say these types of blocks always prove the most challenging.  You begin with an idea of how many are needed to get your size.  But then you get caught up in slicing and dicing all the lovely fabric that was provided.  Add on to that, the desire to use a piece of everything...  And then you realize you need more parts of varying size.

I have succeeded, although I didn't trim it down.  I am happy with the outcome.  I hope you are as well Maren.

p.S. I think I have finally figured it out with this block.  Smiles

Dutch Rose for June

I went back and forth on what fabrics to use for this.  After organizing my sewing area recently, I have been on a self-imposed “fabric diet”.  With shopping not an option, I went to my stash.  I think every quilter has some fabrics that they hoard, covet, pet, and can’t imagine cutting.  The fabrics that I have included this month are decades old and have stood the test of time – vintage sheets.  Some of the fabrics are ‘brand new’, never used, and were still in the package, while others are super soft and used.  Almost all the fabrics are from a vintage sheet fat quarter swap earlier this year.  I think this is the perfect way to show how well these fabrics all work together.

If you would send also send me the pieced “bonus” blocks, I would really appreciate it.   Don’t worry about pressing them open…or even cutting them apart, if you string piece.  I want to use them to make a sawtooth border around the entire quilt.  Here is my pile of string-pieced HST “bonus” blocks.

Loving bein the Queen Bee for May

So my challenge was an up-to-date sun bonnet Sue or Sam.  And you have already seen the one by Kimberly... The girl is on fire with that one.

I just got another from Maria G. This one rocks complete with the beats headphones... Soo looking forward to the others...

The NW Ohio MQG is excited to kick off our first challenge of the year! And because we are so excited about this challenge we want to welcome all of our quilty friends to participate.

The idea behind this challenge is to visit your local art museum (or gallery....) and find a piece of art that inspires you. Any piece! A sculpture, a piece of glass, an oil painting, anything! Classic, baroque, modern, contemporary - your choice! You game?

Girl on Fire

This block was quite a challenge for me.  I really struggled with finding inspiration.  I looked through Google images, Pinterest, and Etsy only to find thousands of images of traditional Sunbonnet Sue.  I wanted to make something original yet recognizable   My inspiration was Katniss from The Hunger Games.  I hope my translation works and that E likes it.  I used a blanket stitch around all the raw edges and thread-painted the bow and arrow.

Stitching a Legacy & Heritage of Quilts

A quilt exhibit and sale will be held at Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center on Saturday

and Sunday, June 8 and 9, from 1 to 5 pm, and on Wednesday, June 12 from 7 to 9 pm. The

Opening Reception is Saturday, June 8 from 3 to 5pm. All are welcome. Admission is free.

Proceeds from the sale will benefit the Mariandale Retreat Center’s Outreach Programs.

The quilt show has a rich backstory. The late Nancy Murphy of Croton-On-Hudson succumbed

to breast cancer in 2001, leaving behind a husband and two sons. An avid quilter and quilting

teacher, she also left behind fabric and equipment, which her husband sold, donating the

proceeds to cancer research.

Roll forward to just last year, Mike Murphy was moving to a smaller house, his sons now grown

and starting families of their own. In the attic he discovered tubs of unfinished work: quilts;

needlepoints; appliques and embroidery.

Having heard that there were quilters who met at Mariandale, Mike Murphy called to see if he

could donate the materials. He met with Sister Donna Brunell, a Dominican Sister of Hope, and

director of Hands for Hope. Sister Donna enlisted the help Carole Burton, a Mariandale quilter,

who actually had known Nancy Murphy, to help catalogue the donation.

“Although we expected fabric we might use in other projects, we were both amazed at the

beauty of the unfinished quilts and high quality of the craftsmanship. At first I was overwhelmed

by the number of projects in various stages of being completed,” said Sister Donna, “but then I

recognized the legacy, not only of the quilts, but of the techniques we could learn by completing

them.” It was decided that the quilts would be finished by volunteers from among Mariandale

quilters and friends and would be celebrated in the exhibit and sale in June.

At Mr. Murphy’s request, any proceeds from the sale of Nancy’s quilts will benefit Mariandale

Outreach Programs. These programs serve the spiritual needs of the poor, marginalized,

previously incarcerated, homeless and especially women in the surrounding communities,

including New York City.

The quilt exhibit and sale, which will also include quilts crafted by Mariandale quilters, will be

on display in the Chapel at Mariandale. Besides the posted hours above, they can be seen by

appointment, also, during the week of June 8th to the 15th. Call 914-941-4455 ext. 100 for an

The Mariandale Retreat and Conference Center is a 501(c) 3 non-profit ecumenical organization

located one mile south from the Croton Harmon Train Station. It is a full service retreat and

conference center with 61 acres of land on the Hudson, 40 bedrooms and full meal service,

a swimming pool, nature trails and a labyrinth. It is available for group and private retreats,

organizational meetings, and offers unique spiritual programming throughout the year. It is the

A Day For Quilts

 A group of us got together this past weekend to view quilts, enjoy the sunshine and have fun.  We went to the Northern Star Guild's show at JFK High and to the Katonah Museum of Art.  Following are a few of the many we enjoyed at JFK (KMA didn't allow photos).  These photos don't do real justice but... The one showing "white gloves" was showing the back that was pieces and appliqued and quilted from the back so the "log cabin" front had an amazing floral design.  The last of this post was a quilt consisting of old labels!  The elephants was biased applique on top of cleverly arranged squares.
