Lucky Bee - August Block for Naomi

I loved Naomi's fabrics and the premise of her assignment. Make a block that says "water", in any of its forms or representations. There were so many ideas in my mind! Isn't it unfortunate, though, when one's skills are not anywhere near one's imagination? Many concepts were nixed: too difficult, too impractical, too difficult.

I then remembered a workshop I took at QUILTCON with Sherri Lynn Wood (check her stuff at daintytime.net) about improvising piecing using "wedges" of (to use Victoria's very own term) "made fabric". I grabbed my blues and went to town making wedges. Here are the results:

This is a raw block, pure wedge piecing, that reminds me of choppy waters.

I could not cut into your beautifully dyed lily pad. This block measures the required 8x8in. minimum.

The leftovers, using the arc from the DWR template set. Perhaps my favorite.

I will let Naomi do the editing. Use one, use all. They will be mailed on Tuesday.

September Block for Maria

Can you tell my color is blue ...
with a twist ...
Loved choosing favorite fabrics especially for you!

Maria's Block "All about me"

Maria... you were right in that it would be difficult picking fabric for your block...not because I wouldn't part with any, but because I love it ALL and couldn't decide "what's me".  However, I do know that I gravitate toward greens and blues so I dug into that stash.  I was tempted to do the "square" version that you offered but you put me to shame with all your instructions, the professional layout of your note (mine is usually a hand-scribbled list of wants) and your flexibility.  The least I could do was tackle your curves....and they weren't so hard after all!  Looking forward to seeing others' choices and your compilation of them all.  See you in October!

Naomi's water block

Here's your water block Naomi.... sorry to take so long -- summer has been hectic.  I took you at your word that you didn't care what shape etc.... will let you do the trimming.  I loved your dyed fabric and can't wait to see what you do with everyone's contributions.

July Mod Bee for Deirdre

Soooo here it is... Stop by my blog to read the story behind it.... www.cocktailsandthread.blogspot.com.

Original picture....

My focus...

I decided to leave the block square...

MOD BEE ROUND 3 - July Block for Deirdre

As soon as I saw Klimt's Kiss, Deirdre's challenge for us in July, I zeroed in on this fragment. I had to, because I could not think of anything other than Kaffe Fassett's fabric to represent the model's sleeve.

It turns out I did not own the perfect fabric, but I had a couple good second choices. That was the starting point and, lots of seams later, here is my pared down version for Deirdre.

All the other blocks are stunning, I hope this one fits well among them! Maria

August Bee Block for Emily

Soooo round and round we go... I decide to try a new technique.  Well new for me. Ummm not sure what I think, clearly not meant for a multitude of circles and especially not small circles... But luckily she wanted a bunch so u was able to hide my treats.. Smiles go to my blog for the video etc...

Bee Block for Naomi

Using Naomi's dyed fabric and a few of my batiks
I tried to create a block that gives the illusion of
 gently breaking waves.
Some seams are normal but others are raw
and some are half and half.
You need to look hard to see this.

July & August Bee blocks

Ellen's blocks: I really liked how these colors all work together. This was harder than it looked to keep it all straight.

Naomi's block: I was thinking of rain for this block, especially since we've had so much this summer!

Circles for Emily

Here is the block I've made for Emily's Polka Dot Block.
I don't normally work with solids, so this was really different.

I can't wait to see these all together!

Water Inspired block for Naomi

Finished up the August block for Naomi today. Naomi send some hand painted fabric and asked for a water inspired block.  I had some other fabric which played nicely with hers - hope she likes it.

Next up... work on Emily's Circles.

Lucky Bee - July Blocks for Ellen

A bit delayed, these two squares for Ellen. What seemed an easy challenge, ended up with the realization that I cannot sew a straight line. I would cut, measure and double check and I had a square. After sewing, somehow the blocks transformed and they were not perfectly square anymore (argghh!). After a couple of tries, this is what I could produce. Not really wonky but... I hope they work for you, Ellen!

Mod Bee Round 3 - August Block for Emily

Here is another block for you, Emily! It was great to have such a big canvas to lay out all those gorgeous circles. The picture, as usual, does not do justice to the fabric colors. As requested, your envelope will be mailed at the end of the month. Can't wait to see all the blocks together!

Blowing bubbles.....

I was very excited to get this in the mail and back-basted just in time for an airplane trip to Tennessee.  Most of these solids are Michael Miller's cotton couture and are really lovely to work with--so soft and silky.  The colors are really nice too, but a little hard to capture on my iphone on an overcast day!
Had a good time putting these "bubbles" together for you, Emily!
xoxo,
Kim

KISS the summer goodbye........

Hi my quilting friends,
I've been trying to make the most of little summer moments, working on bee blocks and progressing with some long-standing projects.....like my applique flower blocks!

For July, Deirdre asked us to be inspired by a section of Gustav Klimt's painting,  The Kiss.

I chose this section here and a "digitized" representation with 2" squares.

Thanks for the challenge, Deirdre.......excited to see how you use the blocks!
