December 2014 Giant HST Blocks For Chris (That's Me!)

December is my turn to be Queen Bee and I'm asking everyone in the Bee to make me two giant HSTs (16.5" square).  I need 36 blocks in total so I've made the first 14 myself (pic below)

There's a full tutorial for my Giant HST Quilt on my blog made by ChrissieD and I'll be handing out printed instructions and fabric at Saturday's meeting.  Anyone not there I'll post your packages on to you next week - Chris :)

DECEMBER BLOCK LOTTO

Dear Mods,

We are all probably getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving Day with family and friends, so our sewing time might be limited. 

Just a reminder, though, of our next meeting's Block Lotto.We chose to make this time a 12.5" unfinished block, using low volume fabrics. The block design is up to each of us.

I wanted to play with half rectangle triangles so here is my block. 

I think the lotto is a great opportunity to try out a new technique or design.

Lucky Bee - November blocks for Sandy

More stars! Fun to make, except they made quite clear how poor my visual-spacial abilities are. Seam reaper to the rescue, all those pesky PP segments were done and redone and the four stars were finally completed.

I hope you like them, Sandy! I will bring them to you to our December meeting.

Mod Bee - November blocks for Rossanna

Here are my two blocks for you, Rossanna: a traditional and a wonky block with some poppy looking flowers. I can't say much about the execution, except that the candy wrappers used are but a fraction of what was consumed last October in my household. I chose to use chocolate wrappers as their thin metal sheets seemed to be more pliable. I secured every element with some green Perle cotton thread.
I hope they work well with the other blocks and that your vision is realized. Will bring them to our December meeting.

First time paper piecing. Interesting, but I think I did more seam ripping than sewing.

Here are your "confetti star" blocks, Sandy... Sorry about the shadows in the pictures...they're really quite bright!  I can't say I'm a fan of paper-piecing.  I think the results are fabulous, but the process, not so much...  But I persevered and here they are.  Hope they're what you're looking for.  I'll bring them to December's meeting, if that's ok.

Five  2.5" x 44" strips 

OR

Ten 2.5 x 22" strips

Packaged nicely with a ribbon

and a card from you.

November's Charity Block: Red and White Crosses

We're making red and white cross blocks for our first charity block gather.  This is a simple modified 9-patch, measuring 6 1/2" unfinished.  (6" finished block size.)

Color scheme:
Red, white, and red and white prints.
Note: If you were at the meeting and picked up the little center squares, awesome!  Please use them.  They'll be a good unifying element in the quilt.  If you weren't there or want to make more blocks than you took squares for, feel free to use another print for your block.

Supplies: 
(1) 2" square  for center (e.g. the square given at our meeting)
(4) 2 3/4" squares
(4) 2" x 2 3/4" rectangles

Sew the pieces into rows like this:

Then sew the rows together into your block.

Done!  Make as many as you'd like and bring them to our next meeting.  We'll have a little goody drawing among all the participants in this block gather.  160 blocks = 2 lap size quilts!  Can we do it???

Sanitary Napkin Challenge!

You guys! Look at this wonderful spread of napkins! You've done yourselves proud :)

As a reminder, Craft Hope (an organization I have supported in the past) has chosen to support for their 25th project - We Are Kenya.

From the Craft Hope website:
"We Are Kenya is an organization who believes that one way to change a society is to change the future of it's youth. They are a nonprofit dedicated to feeding and educating sweet children in the slums of Soweto, Kenya. Soweto is the second largest slum in Kenya and home to We Are Kenya. Soweto is a large slum whose people daily struggle with sickness, crime, hunger, and hopelessness that results from severe poverty. In a slum where many children have one or no parent, the daily quest for food supersedes any hope for education."

At the guild meeting in September I asked if anybody would be interested in helping me support this cause by making reusable cloth sanitary napkins. As someone who has had the privilege of an extended education well into my adult years, it breaks my heart to think that others eager to learn might be stopped by something as simple and natural as their monthly cycle. And you guys really stepped up! With those I collected on Saturday, the set Margaret sent to me, and the napkins I made we have collected a total of 33 napkins!

Maria generously provided some supplies to make more napkins at the meeting on Saturday, and as a reminder the deadline for items to arrive at Craft Hope is November 15th. This isn't my deadline but one they have set. I am going to be mailing out the napkins I have November 10th or 11th. At this point, unless you can get your completed napkins to me on the Upper East Side (work hours) or Elmhurst (evenings/weekends) before that date, I wont be able to install snaps for people. I suggest using sew on snaps or perhaps buttons and buttonholes if you don't have snap pliers. You are of course welcome to mail anything you make individually directly to We are Kenya:

There is still time to participate! I've re-posted a few links below with free tutorials describing multiple different methods of making cloth pads. The basic ingredients are usually 100% cotton fabric plus some 100% cotton absorbent fabric such as flannel, terry cloth or cotton batting, with the potential to add in a waterproof/resistant fabric such as PUL or micro fleece.
