Holiday Swap!

Hello Quilters,

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and is geared up for the meeting on Saturday (12/5)!

This year for our holiday fabric swap, bring a bundle of three fat quarters to exchange. These can be any color, print or theme. Bring a bundle of three, get a bundle of three.

As Buddy the Elf says, "The best way to spread holiday cheer, is swapping fabric with friends who are dear."

We will also have some holiday nibbles, so in addition to your lunch feel free to bring a treat to share. See you Saturday!

Converging corners?

Hopefully this will be ok - I have a bag of scraps and couldn't resist using a bunch of the pieces for this block.

Sandy's Blocks

Notice there are three. For some reason I thought there were 9 strips in the block instead of 6 so….. I wish I would learn to read directions!

Sandy's blocks

Here are Sandy's blocks.  Nice to be able to "continue on a roll" with similar blocks, but also fun to see how different a change in color or patterns can create new looks.  I think blue and yellow is a favorite of many and Sandy will have a "smashing" quilt when done~

Block Lotto for December

We got some great ideas for Block Lotto at the brainstorming session! So stay tuned for some exciting challenges in 2016. For December, we've selected the converging corners block. Here's a photo of the one I made.

After much debate, we decided on solid white for the background and any combination of brights for the center and two corner. I think these will look really festive when they're all put together. The more you make, the better chance you have of winning. So forget holiday shopping, stay home and sew!

Another block for Sandy

Such a fun block to do - happy holidays!

November Lucky Bee Block for Sandy

Sandy jumped on board the scrappy-trip-around-the-world train as queen of the Lucky Bee for November.  She sent along some blue, white, and gold strips, and asked us to add more of the same (especially yellows). Since I've done quite a few of these blocks lately (for Queen Tina last month and for Diana's Golden Needle), it was almost a matter of calling on muscle memory to assemble these two blocks.

I see a lovely scrappy quilt in Sandy's future.  (Who doesn't love blue and yellow together?)

October 2015 Meeting Show & Tell

Since it was the first meeting of the year, October's meeting was jam packed with a lot of information, chatter, and excitement! We kicked off the year with our new president, Cynthia Clark leading with housekeeping and announcements. This year, we are changing up the meeting notes on the blog. Members (who want to share, this is purely optional) may update the blog post with their own notes on the item they brought to Show & Tell. As the guild grows, it becomes increasingly hard to capture all the details of the quilts and take photos!

It's important to document quilts for future generations and share our stories. Here are some ideas for info to include underneath your photo:
- Dates (begun/completed)
- Layout format (i.e. single block, medallion, sampler, crazy, wholecolth, pictorial)
- Subject of quilt
- Blocks: size, number in the quilt, arrangement (on point, rotated, straight)
- Fiber types used (i.e. cotton, linen, silk, etc.)
- Fabric patterns, styles, motifs, or prints (batik, floral, hand-dyed)
- Construction techniques (hand piecing, machine piecing, English paper piecing, applique)
- Embellishment
- Quilt back (fiber type, description)
- Binding
- Quilt batting
- Quilt top made by (individual, group/bee)
- Quilted by (individual or group, machine or hand)
- Quilt provenance (city, state, country)
- Who is the quilt for? Occasion? Purpose/use?
- Quilt design and material sources? Pattern from a designer, your own design?

This is definitely much more than you need to include. Feel free to include it all or as little as you like!

For a serious full 10 page form, check this one out from The Quilt Index.

Here goes!

Nellie: I started this quilt more than a year ago in September 2014. I was in the midst of a move and my dear friend, also a quilter, was having a baby. The baby was due in November and I decided in the midst of all of this, I would definitely be able to complete this quilt in time! Needless to say, I finished it just barely under the baby's 1st birthday, so timing isn't so bad! The pattern is from Carolyn Friedlander's book, Savor Each Stitch. It is the Circle Lattice pattern. The circles and lines are actually one piece of fabric cut in entirety (like a paper snowflake) from a 36" square of fabric. It was basted and appliqued by hand (hence, the quilt practically went everywhere with me... it's been on Amtrak trains, hotels, airplanes!). The border was machine pieced. I also machine quilted straight lines about 1" apart. In between the lines, I hand quilted using silk thread. The fabrics used are from Erin McNorris, Rashida Coleman Hale, and Geninne Zlatkis (backing). This quilt was truly a labor of love and I loved the slow stitching aspect of it.

November block lotto entry

After seeking guidance from the gang on the Facebook page on whether to go with gold on a brown background or brown on a gold background, I went with the majority and finished this block this morning.

Looking forward to seeing (and winning!) the other blocks.
